April's planting

I had an inspiration for the garden this morning and acted on it. I thought it would be done by noon...hahaha, right. So there were really 3 ideas that came together. 1st, I wanted to finish the pavers against the wall for the kitchen garden. 2nd, I wanted to move my fountain to the same garden (for a bit of whimsy). 3rd, I found some great pots for the kitchen window (kitchen garden minor) and I wanted to fill them with herbs.

So, off to Home Depot, this morning at 0900. Pretty much stuck to the list, with one extra Valencia Orange. I am still in shocked that we can walk into a local store and pick up a citrus tree. The trauma that occurred when the Citrus Nazis came is another post for another day. My count for citrus is (1) Calamondin, (1) Ruby red Grapefruit, (1) Valencia Orange, and (1) Key Lime.

Got the pavers in (Noon) then the fountain (2pm), moved the Sage, Thyme, and Flat Parsley, emptied the compost (Yuk!!!), tilled the ground with a hoe and planted a Cubenelle pepper, Banana pepper, ? hot pepper, White Eggplant. I had left 1 struggling cherry tomato, 1 healthy Cubanelle pepper (w/ 3 peppers), the magnificent Rosemary. For the front row I planted 8 green Zucchinis, and 8 Yellow Squash, Tucked away in the back I planted a couple of Black Eyed Peas.

In the end, the sun was going down, my back was aching and my dog was begging to go to the Dog Park (She has a Life, Thank You)

So here is my thought for today. Is it reasonable to suggest that folks in Miami have a kitchen garden? I'm a 37 year old healthy girl, and it took me all day to handle a 14 x 4 space. I'm still inspired by the winter garden that was so abundant. I've never had a summer garden. Not sure if it will work. Heck, it is all but an experiment.

Speaking of the compost....Oh Man! I can smell it in my office. At least my neighbors are shut in with their air condition, or there would be some complaint. I think my error was in waiting to long. It had become too heavy to spin. But as soon as I put it in the dirt, the whole thing became more tolerable. The dirt instantly absorbed the moisture and I tossed back the pieces that were not composted yet. I can see were this would turn normal people off. It is a bit nasty and I'm a fairly outdoorsy person. (read...not south beach material.)

That is for now.
